CHESTER, SC – Prayers and a call for help as families in Chester fight back against gang violence.
Some neighbors who showed up to a Sunday night prayer service say they’re being terrorized in their own homes.
The Chester County Sheriff joined pastors and leaders for a city-wide prayer on the war on gangs at Brown’s Chapel AME Zion Church.
“We’ve done a lot of suffering and been through a lot of pain,” said Pastor Bernard Morris.
Heads were bowed and hands lifted at the church. Among the crowd holding hands and shedding tears was Sheriff Alex Underwood.
“They want to be protected and they have to be protected and in order to do that, we’re going to need more man power,” said Underwood.
After declaring war on gangs in Chester County last month, the Sheriff is now asking the county council for more deputies.
“With 580 square miles and only five deputies patrolling on a shift, we’re looking at a little over 110 square miles for each deputy,” said Underwood.
