CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In-state tuition rates for the 2013-2014 school year jumped by 2.9%, leaving some parents and students wondering if they can afford to pay for college.
Crystal Davis is a past recipient of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund. She has since graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a 3.5 GPD, “Because of this fund I was able to receive scholarships within the fund scholarship because of my academics and volunteer work.”
Today she’s an entrepreneur, a home owner and a dedicated mentor striving to help students get into college.
The Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship fund has awarded $3 million dollars since 1983. This year they plan on offering scholarships to over 100 students.”
Dr. Crawford, founder of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund says he focuses solely on keeping a promise he made 30 years ago, “If they do well academically and do well socially I would ask anybody for money for them to go to school.”
Hoping to receive scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year are brother and sister Devon and Jovannah Campbell.
As seniors, they know the importance of going to college. Devon’s interests are in computer engineering, and Jovannah wants to major in visual arts, “There’s no other way to do the things I want to do without a degree. I should go to college like he said be the first people in the family to go to college and know what it’s like to do something for myself.”
Envisioning what it will be like if they become scholarship recipients… they find themselves speechless, “It will make me feel happy, I will be like of my goodness yeah yeah. I got a scholarship what you gotta say now.”
Dr. Crawford wants to send a special thank you to all community supporters for making this scholarship fund possible. In the last 30 years over 600 students have received scholarships.
