Contact: Dr. Victor Mack UNC-Charlotte December 8, 2014 704/687-8998 2015 Boldly Engaging Students in Culturally-Relevant Teaching (BEST) Conference CHARLOTTE – The University of North Carolina at Charlotte College of Education will host the 2015 Boldly Engaging Students in Culturally-Relevant Teaching (BEST) Conference on Friday, January 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The purpose of this conference is to have educational and community stakeholders assemble to discuss and present: “¢

best practices in the classroom that support diverse population learning; “¢

professional development models that support sustained implementation of critical pedagogy; “¢

curriculum integration that promotes stakeholder investment; and “¢

political, economic, and social factors contributing to status quo curriculum and instruction and measures for change. Professionals in K-12 schools, higher education, government, traditional, and non-traditional service providers are invited to attend. Participants who attend all activities and complete an additional assignment are eligible to receive one (1) continuing education unit (CEU) for a total of 10 hours of contact. Keynote presentations include: Dr. Roslyn Mickelson presenting, “Why School Diversity Matters: The Effects of School Composition on Educational and Life Course Outcomes.” Dr. Mickelson is a Professor of Sociology and Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Charles Hutchison presenting, “Understanding Diverse Learners: Theory and Practice.” Dr. Hutchison is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown presenting, “Building Cultural Competence: Working Together to Advance Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice.” Dr. Shankar-Brown is an Associate Professor of Social Justice Education, the Jessie Ball duPont Chair of Education, and the Director of Graduate Education Programs at Stetson University.
