CHARLOTTE, NC — Local protesters are making it clear that toll lanes on I-77 would be bad for the Charlotte.

Nearly 100 people from the organization “Widen I-77” gathered at the Exit 28 bridge in Cornelius Friday night.  The group is protesting the plan that would add toll lanes on I-77 between Charlotte and Mooresville.  Protesters say the toll lanes will just make traffic worse.

“Traffic would flow a lot better if they would just add additional lanes instead of toll lanes.  With that statements, there’s an admission that if they put the toll lanes in, there will be just as much gridlock on these roads,” said Widen I-77 organizer Chuck Suter.

Back in March, a superior court judge denied the group’s request for a preliminary injunction to delay the project.  NC DOT estimates tolls could be as high as $21 dollars a day for commuters who drive the entire 27-mile stretch.
