Protesters Demand Change To Clean Energy At Duke Shareholder Meeting

CHARLOTTE,NC — The annual Duke Energy shareholder meeting brought out protesters demanding a transition to solar energy Thursday.

Protesters pushing for solar energy and wiping out dirty coal was the motivation behind the protest’s at today’s meetings.

Community members took their message inside the duke energy shareholder meeting calling for the company to stop blocking solar energy.

β€œDuke Energy is destroying my community, my air and water with its toxic coal ash, and has the audacity to simultaneously block access to the clean solar energy that people want and need,” said Michael Carroway, who spoke at a press conference outside the meeting about the impacts of Duke’s coal ash on his hometown of Goldsboro, NC.

Many NC residents say they are angry that Duke Energy has blocked access to solar, while communities have suffered from impacts of toxic coal ash dumping.

On Tuesday, Greenpeace NC flew its Earth-shaped hot air balloon with banners that read: β€œDuke don’t block solar” and β€œSolar works for all.” On the ground below, community members also spelled out β€œDuke: we want access to solar” in giant white letters.

Leading into this week,”β€Ή”β€Ή β€œclean graffiti” (“β€Ήa clean message on a dirty sidewalk) with an #IStand4Solar message was “β€Ήimplemented “β€Ήin strategic locations throughout Charlotte.”β€Ή

Today’s protests were another demonstration of the frustration the company’s careless coal ash dumps have sparked.
