CHARLOTTE,NC–Illegal dumping at the Mallard Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant has sparked CMUD to continue intensive sampling and testing of five wastewater plants.
CMUD has observed that wastewater treatment plants can be very effective in removing PCB from wastewater.
Very low PCB concentration was found leaving the McAlpine plant and downstream to any drinking water which indicates that there was no increased risk of PCB contamination.
The drinking water in Charlotte was not affected by the illegal dumping incident.
EPA staff has asked CMUD staff to help develop better guidelines and action steps that could assist other utilities in the event of illegal dumping incidents.
