(AP) β The University of Michigan has called a football news conference today, saying it’s a “major announcement.” From all reports, the Wolverines will name former quarterback Jim Harbaugh as their new coach. A person with knowledge of the discussions tells The Associated Press that the former San Francisco 49ers coach has signed a deal to return to Ann Arbor, Michigan.
UNDATED (AP) β It is another busy day of bowl games in college football. Today’s schedule features the Music City Bowl with Notre Dame taking on LSU with the Belk Bowl and Farm Bowl following. In the Belk Bowl, Louisville is facing Georgia while the Foster Farm Bowl has Stanford playing Maryland.
UNDATED (AP) β In case you missed it yesterday, three NFL teams dismissed their head coach. The Jets jettisoned Rex Ryan while the Bears got rid of Marc Treastman and the Falcons, Mike Smith. In the case of the Jets and Bears the general managers were also fired.
NEW YORK (AP) β Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (ehn-DAH’-muh-kahng soo) won’t be playing in Sunday’s playoff game for the Lions. He was given a one-game suspension by the NFL for stepping on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ left leg twice, once with each foot, last Sunday. The decision means Suh will miss the Lions’ playoff game Sunday against Dallas, although he still has time to appeal the suspension.
MONTREAL (AP) β The U.S. is 3-0 in hockey’s World Junior Championship following a 3-0 win over Slovakia. Sonny Milano broke a scoreless tie late in the second period before Dylan Larkin and John Hayden tallied. Thatcher Demko made 17 saves for the Americans, who take on Canada on Wednesday.
