NBA PLAYOFFS

Hawks, Warriors advance

UNDATED (AP) β€” The NBA’s no. 1 seeds have ended lengthy franchise droughts by reaching the conference finals. In the East, the Atlanta Hawks are in for the first time since 1970, while the Golden State Warriors head to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 1976.

DeMarre Carroll scored a playoff career-high 25 points, including two layups in the last minute as the Hawks escaped with a 94-91 triumph over the Wizards in Washington.

Wizards forward Paul Pierce drained a potential game-tying 3-pointer, but it was ruled through replay that the shot was released after the final buzzer. Pierce hit a game-winner at the buzzer to put Washington up two games to one in the series before the Hawks won the next three games.

Jeff Teague (teeg) finished with 20 points and seven assists, while Paul Millsap chipped in 20 points and 13 rebounds. Teague assisted on Carroll’s last-minute baskets.

The Hawks survived another poor shooting night by Kyle Korver, who scored just two points on 1 of 8 from the floor. The All-Star contributed just 17 points over the final four games.

Bradley Beal had a game-high 29 points and John Wall added 20 and 13 assists for the Wizards. Pierce shot 1-for-7 in scoring four points.

The Hawks next take on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals, a series that doesn’t begin until Wednesday in Atlanta.

The Warriors relied on their long-range shooting to close out a six-game series with the Grizzlies, winning 108-95 in Memphis. The Warriors drained a playoff-best 15 3-pointers, with Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry shooting 8-for-15 from beyond the arc to finish with 32 points. Curry also had 10 assists and ended the third quarter with a 62-footer that put Golden State ahead 76-68.

Klay Thompson had 20 points, Draymond Green added 16 and Harrison Barnes 13 in the Warriors’ third straight win.

Marc Gasol (gah-SAHL’) led the Grizzlies with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

Golden State next faces the winner of Sunday’s game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Rockets in Houston. Game 1 of the Western Conference finals are Tuesday in Oakland.

Yanks place Whitley on DL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β€” The New York Yankees have put right-hander Chase Whitley on the disabled list with a sprained right elbow and recalled right-hander Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Whitley left in the second inning of Thursday night’s loss to Tampa Bay with right elbow pain that had been bothering him for a while. He underwent an MRI exam and other tests and manager Joe Girardi expressed concern that he may need Tommy John surgery.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Potential changes to men’s hoops

UNDATED (AP) β€” The NCAA could make another attempt to boost scoring and reduce physical play under the basket in men’s basketball.

The Men’s Basketball Rules Committee has recommended reducing the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds, the biggest step in a series of changes aimed at speeding up a game that has reached historic lows in scoring two of the past three seasons. The new shot clock will be in place the next two seasons, pending approval of the NCAA’s Playing Rules Oversight Committee.

The rules committee also recommended reducing second-half timeouts by one per team and removing timeout calls in live-ball situations. Timeouts called within 30 seconds of a scheduled media timeout also would be counted as a media timeout.

In addition, the committee recommends that teams get a total of 10 seconds to move the ball to the front court, a limit on the time teams have to replace disqualified players and an elimination of the 5-second, closely guarded rule while players are dribbling the ball.

NFL OBIT-YEPREMIAN

Former Dolphins kicker dies

MIAMI (AP) β€” Former Miami Dolphins kicker and two-time Super Bowl winner Garo Yepremian (yeh-PREH’-mee-an) has died of cancer at age 70.

The Cyprus native came to the United States at age 22 and played pro football from 1966-81. He ended the longest game in NFL history with a 37-yard field goal in double overtime to give the Dolphins a playoff victory over Kansas City on Christmas 1971.

Yepremian broke in with the Lions and also played for the Saints and Buccaneers. He scored 1,074 regular-season points, hitting 210 field goals and 444 extra points.

Yepremian is best known for his botched pass attempt following a blocked field goal in Super Bowl 7. He picked up the ball and tried to throw it but fumbled, and the Redskins’ Mike Bass ran it 49 yards for a touchdown.

NFL-BRADY

More on appeal

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) β€” Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wants to call Commissioner Roger Goodell as a witness in the appeal of the four-game suspension he was handed for “Deflategate.” The union also says in a letter it will call NFL vice president Troy Vincent, who handed down the punishment.

The Super Bowl MVP was suspended for four games and the Patriots were fined $1 million and docked a pair of draft picks for using illegally inflated footballs in the AFC championship game.

The appeal also complains that the evidence collected in the Wells report doesn’t support such a harsh penalty.

The union lawyers say that the suspension is invalid because only Goodell can punish players for conduct detrimental to the league. The penalties were handed down by Vincent, NFL’s executive vice president of football operations.

NHL-CANADIENS

Habs drop three vets

BROSSARD, Quebec (AP) β€” Veterans Manny Malhotra (mal-HOH’-trah), Sergei Gonchar (SUR’-gay GAHN’-char) and Mike Weaver will not be back with the Montreal Canadiens next season. General manager Marc Bergevin (BUR’-zheh-vihn) made the announcement, saying “they did great service for our team.”

PGA-CHARLOTTE

McIlroy is in the hunt

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” Webb Simpson and Robert Streb are co-leaders at the midway point of the PGA event in Charlotte.

Simpson chipped in twice for birdie in a 5-under 67 that puts him in a tie with the first-round leader at minus-10.

Martin Flores and Patrick Rodgers are tied for third at 8 under, while top-ranked Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson are three shots back. Mickelson had a 66, and McIlroy matched Simpson’s 67.

LPGA-KINGSMILL

UCLA student leads LPGA event

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) β€” Alison Lee shot a 4-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead in the LPGA Tour’s Kingsmill Championship.

The 20-year-old UCLA student had a 9-under 133 total at the midway point as she seeks her first victory since turning pro in December. Lee tied for fourth in the Kia Classic in March in California and has three top-25 finishes in her rookie season.

Australia’s Minjee Lee and France’s Perrine Delacour were tied for second. The 18-year-old Minjee Lee had a 67, and Delacour shot 68.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) β€” Kevin Sutherland and Jeff Maggert both eagled the par-5 11th hole and share the second-round lead in the first Champions Tour major of the year, the Regions Tradition. NASCAR-SPRINT SHOWDOWN

Biffle, Bowyer earn way into All-Star race

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) β€” Greg Biffle and Clint Bowyer (BOY’-ur) have raced their way into Saturday’s $1 million NASCAR Sprint All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Biffle led every lap en route to victory in the first 20-lap segment in Friday night’s Sprint Showdown. Bowyer needed a three-wide pass to get to the lead in the second segment.

The races were for all drivers not already qualified for the All-Star race.

Danica Patrick won the fan vote to complete the field for Saturday night’s race.

Failing to claim one of the three spots up for grabs Friday night was Martin Truex Jr., who has been one of the most dominant drivers of 2015. Truex has 10 top-10 finishes in 11 races this year and is second in the Sprint Cup Series standings.

NASCAR

New fire rules

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) β€” NASCAR is updating its fire safety requirements for race teams in the wake of an explosive accident on pit road at Richmond. Three crew members were injured in a fire that erupted during a pit stop in last month’s Xfinity Series race. Fuel spilled as the crew was servicing Brendan Gaughan’s (gawnz) car and a spark ignited the blaze.

NASCAR will now mandate all over-the-wall pit crew members wear fire-protective underwear, socks, head socks and gloves. All previously were recommended for over-the-wall pit crew members other than the gas man.

ROMNEY-HOLYFIELD FIGHT

Holyfield jabs Romney for charity

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) β€” Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and five-time heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield squared off in the ring at a charity fight night event in Salt Lake City.

Romney, who’s 68, and the 52-year-old Holyfield sparred, if you could call it that, for just two short rounds Friday before Romney ran away from the boxer and threw in the towel, giving up a round early in the lighthearted fight that came amid several other fights by professional boxers and an auction.

The two barely threw any punches and largely just danced around, occasionally lightly jabbing each other in the midsection in what was much more of a comedic event than an actual bout.

The black-tie affair raised money for the Utah-based organization CharityVision, which helps doctors in developing countries perform surgeries to restore vision in people with curable blindness.
