CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte’s low-performing schools won’t be able to hide their issues much longer. CMS is launching what’s called the Beacon Initiative. The district will pay outside researchers hundreds of thousands of dollars to identify where schools fall short and come up with solutions.
Superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison says the program isn’t about quick fixes. “Before you say ‘I need,’ let’s look at what you already have. And if there are needs that come out of that deep needs assessment, then we can try to fill that gap,” he said.
The state budget battle has led to a gap in funding for teacher assistants. Dr. Morrison says he plans to shift money in the budget to cover that gap this year.
