Β CHARLOTTE, NC — For the third year in a row, property taxes will not increase under the budget recommended by the Mecklenburg County Manager.

Dena Diorio presented her $1.6 billion budget to commissioners Thursday. Β While property taxes won’t go up, there will be a 1.77 percent tax hike for people who live in unincorporated parts of the county to cover police service. Β That’s just more than 35 dollars more a year for the owner of a $200,000 home.

“We actually had requests of $80 million and we had $29 million to spend. Β So you really try to go through and prioritize and make decisions that are fair and balanced and address as many needs as you can,” said Diorio.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools would get nearly $14 million more than last year, which is much less than the additional $39 million the district asked for. Β The budget plan also includes merit raises for county employees.

The county must adopt its budget by July 1.
