Charlotte City Council Opens Its Ears To A South End Community Desperate To End A Steady Stream Of Noise

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After months of headaches and no sleep, neighbors at a South End townhome community on Doggett Street are fed up with the constant buzzing and humming noise coming from an exhaust pipe on the side of the Hawk Apartment building. WCCB asked at-large city council member Braxton Winston to come hear it for himself and meet with neighbors.

“As I’m standing here having this interview, I’m noticing it more and more, especially as I stand here with my ear towards it,” says Winston.

One resident spoke during the public forum at Monday’s city council meeting. Winston says he circled the item on the agenda because it’s relevant as the city expands.

“From the city perspective, we’re learning right. We’re learning how to be an urban city, so perhaps this is something that can be dealt with as we are looking at our comprehensive plan, at our UDO so that we don’t have to rely on super organized citizens.”

At-large member Dimple Ajmera listened to the sound and took action. She says code enforcement has been made aware of the issue, and they’ve reached out to the county’s code division as well to investigate.

“They are trying to figure out a permanent solution by working with the building management to address this issue,” Ajmera says.
