CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person is dead and another facing charges after a north Charlotte crash between a vehicle and moped Wednesday evening, according to police.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to West Sugar Creek Road around 6:50 p.m. in reference to a motor vehicle crash involving a moped call for service. Upon arrival, officers located a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu and a 2014 Bashan moped.
The driver, identified as 60-year-old Bernard McGill, was pronounced dead at the scene by MEDIC. The driver and sole occupant of the Malibu, identified as 72-year-old Demetrich Carraway Evans by police, did not sustain any injuries.
Through an initial investigation, CMPD determined that McGill was traveling northwest on West Sugar Creek Road when the Chevrolet executed a left turn in front of him, causing him to strike the front of the Chevrolet as it was turning. Carraway Evans was originally traveling southeast when it entered a left-turn lane.
The Chevrolet stopped before turning, allowed another motor vehicle to pass, and then their initiated turn was in the path of McGill, who was behind the passing motor vehicle, according to police.
Authorities say while operating the moped, McGill was wearing a helmet and the lights were functioning at the time of the crash.
Speed and impairment are not factors in the crash for Carraway Evans, according to a news release.
Police say Carraway Evans has been charged via citation for misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield right of way.
This is an ongoing, active investigation.
