Β OAK ISLAND, NC — The chances of being bitten by a shark are about 1 in 11 million. Β But for three teens swimming off the North Carolina coast, that statistic became a reality.
A 13-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy each lost an arm Sunday in separate shark attacks in Oak Island. Β The two are in fair condition at the time of this report. Β On Thursday, a 13-year-old girl was bitten on the foot by a shark. Β
Now, we’re hearing from witnesses who frantically called 911 after Sunday’s attacks.
“Oak Island,” said the caller to the 911 dispatcher. Β “There’s a girl whose hand has been bitten off by a shark. Β 14th Street beach access and 16th Street Southeast. Β We need an ambulance right away.”
There have been 90 shark attacks in North Carolina since 1900. Β Eleven of those were deadly, the last one in 2009. Β Parents on vacation in Oak Island say they’re very concerned about letting their kids anywhere near the water now.
“I pretty much told my kids… Β playing it pretty safe,” said
