OAK ISLAND, NC — The chances of being bitten by a shark are about 1 in 11 million. But for three teens swimming off the North Carolina coast, that statistic became a reality.
A 13-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy each lost an arm Sunday in separate shark attacks in Oak Island. The two are in fair condition at the time of this report. On Thursday, a 13-year-old girl was bitten on the foot by a shark.
Now, we’re hearing from witnesses who frantically called 911 after Sunday’s attacks.
“Oak Island,” said the caller to the 911 dispatcher. “There’s a girl whose hand has been bitten off by a shark. 14th Street beach access and 16th Street Southeast. We need an ambulance right away.”
There have been 90 shark attacks in North Carolina since 1900. Eleven of those were deadly, the last one in 2009. Parents on vacation in Oak Island say they’re very concerned about letting their kids anywhere near the water now.
“I pretty much told my kids… playing it pretty safe,” said
