CHARLOTTE, NC – “Our community’s disappointed and they’re hurt. And that’s why I equate this to a mourning,” says City Council Representative LaWana Mayfield. But for City Council Members, the time for mourning is over. “No one expected us to be looking at a fourth mayor in a year, but the community moves on,” Mayfield says.
A week and a half after Patrick Cannon’s arrest and resignation, City Council is on track to vote on a new mayor Monday night.
“I don’t really know how you would go about it other than try to find the most honest candidate for it,” says Anna Mims. Charlotte residents like Mims say they like the idea of an outsider in the mayor’s seat. The potential front runners include State Senator Dan Clodfelter, former County Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts, and former City Councilman James Mitchell.
Mayfield supports Mitchell because he was the second highest vote-getter in the last Democratic Primary. But she plans to consider whoever may be able to get the six votes necessary. “Whoever is chosen is someone that we’re going, that I believe that council is going to support because they will be a unifier, and they’ll be able to continue to move our city forward,” she says.
