CHARLOTTE, NC — Dan Clodfelter is an attorney with three decades of experience in North Carolina and Charlotte politics.  Clodfelter is serving his eighth term in the State Senate.  He has represented the 37th district, which includes parts of Mecklenburg county, since 1999.  He was Chairman of the Finance Committee and, before that, he served on the Charlotte City Council representing East Charlotte from 1987 to 1993.

Clodfelter graduated from Davidson College, then went to Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship.  He has worked in private practice at Moore and Van Allen in Charlotte since 1978.

Governor Pat McCrory served on City Council with Clodfelter.  In a statement Monday, the Governor tells WCCB Charlotte, “It’s time to restore the public’s trust by serving the city with the highest of ethical standards.”

Ex-Mayor Patrick Cannon faces up to 50 years in prison if he’s convicted of federal corruption charges.  The case could go to a federal grand jury this month.  The FBI arrested Cannon on March 26.  He’s charged with extortion, bribery, and wire fraud.  The 42-page federal criminal complaint accuses Cannon of using his position to push through development projects.  He’s also accused of accepting bribes totaling more than $48,000 from undercover agents five times over the course of a four-year investigation.
