Unexpected Damage Comes Before Peak of Storms

CHARLOTTE, NC — Storms left trees uprooted around Charlotte Friday, cars crushed and neighborhoods powerless.

“I knew it was going to be bad this morning. I was like, ‘Okay, it hasn’t started yet. I got time to get my supplies.’ Boom. Power went out,” said Mary Ann Kinney.

It was the same unexpected damage in the Pleasant Oaks neighborhood.

“I heard a pop and just looked that direction, and this huge tree came across the road, buried her mailbox and took down three or four power poles,” said Sherri Brown.

Trees fell on cars. Luckily, no one injured.

By early Friday evening, Storm Water Services crews were widening Briar Creek at Shamrock Dr. in East Charlotte to stop water from flooding the busy roadway.

On the West side, Stewart Creek rose next to University Garden Apartments, an area known to flood.
Residents were prepping to evacuate if needed.

The city watched hot spots to stop blockage before creeks caused any floods.

Nine cameras monitor creeks around the city.
