COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β South Carolina reserve forward Brian Steele has decided to end his basketball playing career because of continuing knee problems. Gamecocks coach Frank Martin says Steele will become a student assistant coach with the team this season. Steele is a 6-foot-5 forward who has played in 50 games over the past three seasons.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) β The past two Family Circle Cup champions in Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic have committed to play in the rebranded Volvo Cars Open in 2016. Kerber and Petkovic join Venus Williams and Madison Keys in the clay-court field next April. Kerber outlasted Keys in last year’s finals, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) β South Carolina football commitment receiver Bryan Edwards of Conway and Clemson commitment running back Tavien Feaster of Spartanburg are two of the five finalists for the Palmetto State’s Mr. Football awards. The other finalists are Chapin quarterback Logan Bailey, Dorman quarterback Collin Hill and Fort Dorchester offensive lineman John Simpson.
HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) β Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering fans a “perfect race weather guarantee” for next year’s NASCAR event. The 1.54-mile trioval south of Atlanta is among the tracks that already released its 2016 race dates. The Sprint Cup event is Feb. 28.
