Jags win in London
UNDATED (AP) β In a morning NFL game, U.S. time, Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles connected on a 31-yard touchdown with 2:16 left in regulation to Alan Hurns to give the Jags a 34-31 win over the Bills in London. The Jags led 27-10 going into the final quarter before the Bills scored 18 points to take the lead. The Jags then went down the field for the game winning score, which was helped by a pass interference call.
The Jags are now 2-5 on the season while the Bills fall to 3-4. They have lost three of their last four games.
Of the five unbeaten teams left in the NFL just two are in action today. In an early afternoon game the 5-0 Patriots are playing host to the Jets in an AFC East battle. The Jets start the day a game back of the Patriots with a mark of 4-1.
The other unbeaten team in action today is Carolina. The Panthers are in the spotlight tonight as they play host to the Eagles, who are 3-3 after beating the Giants in the Monday Night game.
The remaining three unbeaten teams all have the week off, Green Bay, Cincinnati and Denver.
Along with the New England-New York Jets game this afternoon the early contests feature Tennessee playing host to the 5-1 Falcons, the Steelers at Kansas City, the Rams home to the Browns, Tampa Bay at Washington, the Lions entertaining the Vikings, Houston at Miami and the Colts on the home turf against the Saints.
In the late-afternoon matchups the Chargers are home to Oakland and Dallas is on the road for an NFC East game with the Giants, who share first place in the NFC East with the Eagles at 3-3. The Cowboys start the day 2-3.
NHL-SCHEDULE
Light NHL card today
UNDATED (AP) β Three games are on the NHL schedule this evening. The first game has Winnipeg playing host to the Minnesota Wild. Minnesota is looking to get its third win in four games. This is the first of five meetings between the clubs this season. A year ago the Jets won three of the five played.
Last year the Kings won three of their five games against Edmonton. Tonight those clubs square off on the Oilers ice.
And in New York the Rangers are playing the Flames, who are gunning for a second straight win after dropping four straight. The Rangers will be without forward Viktor Stalberg, who sustained a head injury in the second period of a loss yday to the Flyers
NASCAR
Gordon starts from up front
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) β Jeff Gordon starts today’s Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway from the pole. Gordon led a round of qualifying dominated by Hendrick Motorsports cars. Following Gordon were teammates Kasey Kahne (KAYN) and Jimmie Johnson who finished 2-3 in qualifying.
Four drivers will be cut from the 12 Chase field following today’s race. Gordon is seventh in the standings, while Earnhardt is 11th in the 12-driver field.
F1-U.S. GRAND PRIX
Scene set for U.S. Grand Prix
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) β Mercedes driver Nico (NEE’-koh) Rosberg has the pole for today’s Formula One world championship race in Austin, Texas. He earned the pole this morning ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.
Heavy rains have pounded the Circuit of the Americas course for three days and qualifying was forced to be held on race day for the first time since 2013. . Race officials allowed only two qualifying rounds as conditions worsened in a session that had been delayed from Saturday.
PGA-SHRINERS
Last round update
LAS VEGAS (AP) β The final round of the PGA’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is underway in Las Vegas. The leader at the end of play yesterday was Brett Stegmaier by one shot. He rebounded from a bogey on the par-3 17th with a 13-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th for a 3-under 68 that has him 13-under for the tournament, one shot ahead of Morgan Hoffman.
LPGA-TAIWAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Ko wins
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) β Lydia Ko ran away with the LPGA Taiwan Championship Sunday to regain the No. 1 spot in the world ranking. The 18-year-old New Zealander holed a 30-yard pitch for eagle on the par-5 12th and finished with a 7-under 65 for a nine-stroke victory. Two South Koreans tied for second.
At 18 years, 6 months, 1 day, Ko is the youngest player to win 10 events on any major tour.
