CMPD Urges Families to Stay Safe This Halloween

CHARLOTTE, NC — Halloween can be lots of fun for kids, but it can also mean some anxious moments for parents. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is urging families to take steps to stay safe this weekend.

Always walk on sidewalks when possible, and make sure you are crossing streets at corners, and using traffic signals and crosswalks. Children under the age of 12 should not be alone without adult supervision. Older kids should trick-or-treat in groups.

Drivers also need to slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods.

“CMPD will be out in full force for the weekend,” says Officer Chris Kopp. “So we’re going to be keeping an eye. One is the traffic and speeders within the neighborhoods, and two is trying to keep it safe for the kids that are darting across the street, trying to go house to house.”

More than 36 million children will dress up in costumes to trick-or-treat this October. Families that may not want to trick-or-treat in neighborhoods can always look for self-contained events at nearby churches and schools.
