His invention landed him in handcuffs. Now, a Texas teen is receiving invitations from the White House and even Facebook’s CEO to show off his engineering skills.
14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed was led out of school in handcuffs after showing a teacher a digital clock he made from a pencil box. The invention apparently scared the educator and the police were called in.
A police spokesman says Mohamed told officers the device was a clock, but that they wanted a “broader explanation”. Police announced Wednesday that no charges will be filed.
The incident led to widespread outrage on social media, with some suggesting that Ahmed was targeted because he’s Muslim. #IStandWithAhmed is still trending on Twitter with celebrities, engineers, journalists, politicians all voicing their support for Ahmed.
“Thank you to all my supporters on Twitter, Facebook, all social media,” said Mohamed. “Thank you all for helping me. I would have never gotten this far if it wasn’t for you guys. Not just you guys, but everybody.”
