UNION COUNTY, NC — New schools for thousands of students in Union County. A controversial redistricting plan went into effect Monday. Parents opposed to the changes fought a lengthy court battle, but were unable to overturn the school board’s vote. School officials say redistricting was necessary to relieve overcrowded schools.
We spoke with a Rocky River Elementary parent who is glad her family is not affected. “I know a lot of people that were affected, and they’re not very happy at all about it. They’re having to go to schools all the way across town. And leave their friends and people they’ve known all their lives,” said Monroe resident Amanda Anderson.
Some students were grandfathered into their previous schools, but their parents have to provide the transportation.
