Do We Still Need Affirmative Action?

Do we still need affirmative action in America? That question is at the center of a big debate in the Supreme Court right now. The court is once again hearing the case involving the University of Texas, and its decision could have a wide reaching impact on all public colleges and universities.

After Wednesday’s extended debate, it’s what Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said that has everyone talking.

“There are those who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas where they do not do well, as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school, a less, a slower-track school where they do well.”

The Supreme Court appears to be torn on the issue. With liberal and conservative justices starkly divided, justices rehashed many of the same arguments they discussed three years ago in the case of Abigail Fisher, who claims she was denied admission to the university in 2008 because of her race.

Several justices questioned the value of ordering more hearings in the case, with Justice Kennedy saying “they’re just arguing the same case.”

So what do you think? Do we still need affirmative action in America? The Edgitators battle it out…
