Well-Known CLT Business Owner Shot, Killed in Home
YORK COUNTY, SC — Deputies are working to unravel the mystery surrounding the murder of a well-known Charlotte business owner.
Investigators say they found Jesse Campbell shot to death in his Clover home on Lake Wylie Wednesday.
Thursday, they searched for signs of a break-in or anyone targeting the owner of Campbell’s Greenhouse.
“He was cheated out of life,” said Katie Cannon.
Cannon says she was one of Campbell’s closest friends.
“This is mind blowing that this has happened to such a great guy,” said Cannon .”He’s a huge part of the community in Charlotte. He’s been in Charlotte forever. He’s touched countless lives.”
Campbell’s Greenhouse has been in Dilworth in Charlotte for at least 30 years.
Deputies say the 64-year-old was supposed to meet a friend there Wednesday, but never showed.
“I’m really still in shock,” said George Dizes.
Dizes works across the street from the greenhouse. He says he saw Campbell three days ago.
“He stopped by to say hello, joked around a little bit like normal, and I was like, ‘Okay, Jesse. We’ll see you on Monday!'” said Dizes.
When Campbell didn’t show up at work Wednesday, a friend called deputies to check his home.
They found him shot inside.
“It’s just sad. He was a good friend, a good neighbor,” said Dizes.
Deputies say they haven’t been called to his home before, and CMPD reports show only one flower theft at his greenhouse three years ago.
“It makes no sense,” said Cannon.
Deputies want to know the last time someone saw Campbell to determine how long he’s been dead.
Family and friends wait for a motive.
“It won’t bring closure, but it will bring justice,” said Cannon.
There were six murders in York County in all of last year, the most well known being the London couple killed by gang members at their Lake Wylie home.
Investigators say that’s not connected to Campbell’s murder.
