You’re probably, hopefully, still going strong with your New Year’s resolution, and if yours includes eating better, the feds have some advice. New dietary guidelines released by the Obama administration Thursday seek to help Americans reduce their likelihood of disease and obesity through a healthy diet.

The new guidelines back away from previous guidance for sodium and dietary cholesterol, but add strict new advice on sugars. According to the report, added sugar in our diet should be no more than 10 percent of daily calories, which is about 12 teaspoons of sugar. To put that in perspective: a can of soda contains about 10 teaspoons.

The government is also removing its limit on daily cholesterol, but still warns: foods with high cholesterol are also high in saturated fats.

As in previous years, the guidelines call for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and seafood. They also say lean meats are okay.

These changes have us wondering: is it the government’s responsibility to make us eat healthy?
