CORNELIUS, N.C. – Three town homes on Bailey Road in Cornelius are badly damaged after a spark from a motorcycle touched off a fire, that was fueled by a ruptured natural gas line.

Firefighters from Cornelius, Huntersville and Davidson were called to 9635 Bailey Road around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. One 3-story unit has fire damage, the other two have smoke damage.

“It was just scary thinking that happened so close. i didn’t know who was hurt. if anyone was hurt. just not knowing how bad it was till you  walked around the back,” said Cornelius resident Jackson Perry.

A nearby day care center on Washam Potts Road was not involved, and not evacuated, according to fire officials.

Firefighters say someone was working on a motorcycle under a deck, and a spark from the motorcycle repair caused the fire. A natural gas line to the middle townhome ruptured and further spread the blaze.

The 96-hundred block of Bailey Road in North Mecklenburg was shut down because a fire hose was spread across the roadway.

No one was hurt.
