Crews Prepare Area Roads for Icy Conditions

CHARLOTTE, NC — Despite a chance of snow in the forecast, many were still caught off guard.

“I’m like, ‘Oh my God it’s snowing!” said one Charlottean.

NCDOTΒ brine crews working through the night to get ahead of the ice threat Thursday morning.

In the foothills, which includes Alexander, Iredell, Catawba and Rowan Counties, NCDOT crews are brining primary routes like interstates, highways and highly traveled roads.Β Crews started in Statesville Wednesday, as NCDOT predicted ice would coat roads there first.

The department is doing the same in parts of the Piedmont, including Lincoln, Gaston, Cleveland and York Counties. NCDOTΒ crews are monitoring road conditions in Mecklenburg, Anson, Cabarrus, Stanly and Union Counties.Β Crews began brining overpasses and roads as snow fell.

The DOTΒ tells us crews have done test runs. They’ve driven their routes and tested equipment, so even if unexpected snow does fall somewhere, they are prepared to get out there quickly to treat roads.
