Highway Patrol: ATV driver intentionally hits trooper

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C.– A state trooper was intentionally hit by an ATV driver early Saturday morning, according the State Highway Patrol.

Officials say a trooper was on routine patrol when he saw two ATVs on N.C. 153 Saturday around 2 a.m.  The trooper attempted to stop the drivers and activated his emergency equipment.

The drivers pulled onto Harmony Lane and when the trooper started walking towards the ATVs one of the drivers intentionally drove toward the trooper and hit him.  The driver then turned around and tried to hit the trooper a second time.

Officials say the trooper fired his weapon in attempt to avoid further injury.  Both of the ATV drivers then fled the scene.

The trooper suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast.
