
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fire crews are battling a massive fire at a recycling plant in the Smallwood neighborhood. The fire was called in just after 3 p.m. in the 2400 block of Chamberlain Avenue at Carolina Recycling. Officials say more than 150 firefighters are on scene in the heat working to extinguish the flames.
Duke Energy has cut power in the surrounding area. Officials say it will be restored when the fire is out. Police are canvassing the neighborhood to make sure residents are okay and safe.Β
Four firefighters were checked out on scene by emergency workers for possible heat exhaustion. One other was transported to Carolinas Medical Center as a precaution.
