Charlotte, N.C. — Mecklenburg county will publish the names of delinquent property taxpayers in the Charlotte Observer on Sunday, April 3, 2016.
Taxpayers who have not paid their real and personal property tax bills in full by February 29, 2016,Β may be include in the announcement.
The advertisement, as required by law, will include the taxpayers name and the principle amount they owe.
The county says the purpose of the advertisement is to notify taxpayers of their obligation.
The tax collector is empowered to garnish funds, seize and sell personal property, foreclose on real property, and seize North Carolina state income tax refunds to satisfy local tax debt.
Mecklenburg County participates in the North Carolina Setoff Debt Program, which authorizes the tax collector to submit the delinquent tax amounts of taxpayers to the state. The state distributes the income tax refund money and/or lottery winnings of delinquent taxpayers to the County to satisfy the tax debt.
Visit paytax.charmeck.org to use the property tax system tool to determine the current amount due for any delinquent real estate or personal property tax bill.
There are four ways to pay your tax bill:
β’Β By Internet: Visit paytax.charmeck.org for a credit card, debit card or eCheck payment.*
β’Β By phone: Dial toll-free 1-800-994-1026 for a credit card, debit card or eCheck payment. *
β’Β By mail: Mail a check or money order and payment stub using the return envelope that accompanied the tax bill.
β’Β In person: Pay at the Tax Collectorβs office located in the Robert L. βBobβ Walton Plaza, 700 East Stonewall Street, Charlotte NC, and at West Service Area Center, 4150 Wilkinson Blvd., Charlotte, NC, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Only cash, money order, or check payments are accepted. Make checks payable to the Mecklenburg County Tax Collector.
*A service fee of 2.35 percent or a minimum of $1.95 is charged for credit card or debit card payments. There is no service fee for eCheck payments.
