UNC Charlotte Students Forced Out of Off-Campus Apartments During Exam Week

CHARLOTTE, NC – Dozens of UNC Charlotte students say they were only given a few hours to move out of their off-campus apartments Saturday.

Residents of Building 18 at Arcadia Student Living had to be out by Midnight.

Management says staff noticed what they perceived to be minor settling in that building and in the clubhouse.

They want engineers to check out the buildings further and say those students were moved out of an abundance of caution.

They say the issue affects around 85 residents.

“I come in like around 7:00 and everyone’s scrambling to get their stuff out,” explains UNC Charlotte Junior Kristen Rankin.

She’s now staying in a hotel while studying for exams.

“You’ve just kinda been uprooted. And then have to, you know, focus in this place that you’re not used to,” she says.

Management says students were given a few options.

They could move temporarily to another Arcadia apartment. They could take a $1500 gift card to find their own temporary housing. Or they will be allowed to terminate their lease immediately.

Residents say management told them they will have engineers look at the buildings and plan to update them within a week.
