UPDATE: N.C. Highway Patrol identified the victim as 59-year-0ld John Cousins Jr. and the officer as Scott Reed. They say that charges are not likely.
STATESVILLE, NC– An investigation is underway after a Statesville Police officer hit and killed a pedestrian early Saturday morning.
Reports say the incident occurred at the 400 block of South Center Street near the intersection of Bell Street.
The officer was reportedly driving a marked patrol car when he struck the victim just after midnight.
Iredell County EMS pronounced the victim dead at the scene and officials have not yet released the name of the victim.
