Update: I-85 Opens Back Up After Power Lines Temporarily Shut Down Highway In Both Directions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced that Interstate 85 near exit 40 and North Graham Street has opened back up in both directions.

The highway was closed for just over two hours from 7:49 a.m. until 9:53 a.m.

Drivers planning to use I-85 should proceed with caution, as the area is expected to have heavy traffic over the coming hours.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Power lines fell onto Interstate 85 near exit 40 and North Graham Street Saturday morning, causing the highway to shut down in both directions, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The incident took place just before 8 a.m., and all north and southbound lanes are closed at this time. It is unclear at the moment what caused the power lines to fall onto the highway.

The NCDOT expects the highway to open back up at approximately 10:49 a.m.

Southbound travelers are asked to take I-77 South or I-485 Outer to reassess I-85 for the time being. Northbound travelers are asked to take I-77 North or I-485 Inner to get back onto I-85 North.
