A select group of North Carolina lawmakers are hoping to cancel an agreement with a private contractor to build toll lanes along Interstate-77. The House Transportation committee approved the proposal to pull out of the controversial 50-year agreement on Wednesday. Charles Jeter, the Huntersville Republican representative, along with other representatives from Mecklenburg County claim Cintra, the company in question, has a history of poor business decisions. They also stated that the agreement would not properly address the congestion on I-77. However, Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson informed the committee that canceling the contract could cost millions of dollars in fees and would leave the area without any way to fix the current traffic problems. In order to go to the full House, the bill must first pass through the Appropriations Committee.
