LENOIR, N.C. – Police say an impaired man hit and killed a cyclist in a motor vehicle crash on Hickory Boulevard.

On December, 10 2023 at 2:22 am, officers were alerted to a motor vehicle crash on Hickory Boulevard, according to a news release. The release states that cyclist Nathan Smith and driver Christopher Murillo were traveling in the same direction and the vehicle collided with the bicycle from the rear.
According to police officers, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene after succumbing to his injuries. A Field Sobriety Test was administered after the officers claim they were suspicious of Murillo being impaired.
Murillo was charged with driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing.
