IKEA recalling 27 million dressers blamed for deaths of children

IKEA recalling nearly 30 million dressers that are being blamed for the deaths of three children

CHARLOTTE, NC — IKEA is recalling 27 million chests and drawers that are being blamed for the deaths of three children.

The Swedish furniture giant says its ‘Malm’ line can fall over on children, injuring, or crushing them to death, if it’s not anchored to the wall.

The manufacturer said they planned to work with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on tip-over protection and innovations to enhance product safety of all of their drawers and dressers.

A campaign for the dressers was launched last year after two children died.  The repair program provided new kits to attach the dressers to the wall for customers who hadn’t used the original hardware to secure the dressers.

The company issued the full recall after a third child died.

IKEA is expected to offer customers full refunds in most cases, or a store credit for older products.
