Residents With Contaminated Wells Oppose Coal Ash Deal

BELMONT, NC– Belmont neighbors with contaminated well water calling on Governor Pat McCrory to veto a new Duke Energy coal ash deal.

The proposed deal would leave most coal ash in place, delaying clean drinking water for residents living near the waste pits until October 2018.

Jim Mitchem who has worked for Duke Energy for over 30 years says it’s time for McCrory to make the right move for the community.

“It’s not unreasonable to ask that the coal ash be moved from areas where it endangers people’s health, lowers their property values and places a stigma on their community,” said Mitchem

If the bill passes, the Coal Ash Management commission will also be eliminated.
