GASTONIA, N.C. — One person was killed in an accident involving a Waste Management truck and a train in Gastonia on Monday afternoon.
Authorities say Thomas Collins Jr. died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.
The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Lowell Road, when a garbage truck attempted to cross the train tracks and was struck by an oncoming train. Witnesses say they heard a loud boom, and the truck burst in to flames.
Officers have indicated that the train crossing did not have a stop arm.
