East Rowan High School Student Drowns In Quarry Over The Weekend

SALISBURY, NC – Rowan County officials have identified the teen who drowned Sunday afternoon in Balfour Quarry.shavis tandy

Officials say 16-year-old Shavice Tandy of Granite Quarry, NC drowned just before noon Sunday while swimming in the quarry on Balfour Quarry Road.

Witnesses say Tandy, a student at East Rowan High School, tried to swim across the quarry but started to struggle about 60 yards out from the bank. That is where he was last seen.

Multiple agencies from around the area responded to the 911 call about the drowning.

Divers recovered Tandy’s body around 1:20pm Sunday afternoon.
