Police: Pineville Walmart Employee Shot By Customer Unwilling To Pay For Food

PINEVILLE, N.C. – A customer at a Walmart shot an employee in the leg after an altercation regarding dog food and chicken, according to police.

On January 28, 2024 at around 6:30 p.m., Pineville police say they responded to a reported shooting at the Walmart on Pineville-Matthews Road. A report says Jonathan Alan Smith, 32, did not scan chicken and dog food at a self-checkout station and was confront by an employee. Smith paid for the dog food, but failed to pay for the chicken and the employee attempted to grab the chicken, resulting in a scuffle according to the report.

The report goes on to further explain that Smith returned to the Walmart with a firearm and a physical altercation ensued and resulted in one of the Walmart employees being shot in the leg. Police say the firearm fell out of Smith’s pocket and was discharged after control for the firearm was fought for.

Smith is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting injury and misdemeanor larceny of the chicken, according to police.
