‘A Part Of Me For A Long Time Faulted Myself’; A Charlotte Woman Describes The Horrifying Night She Was Kidnapped & Raped
CHARLOTTE — A Charlotte woman says she was kidnapped, beaten and raped by a man she didn’t even know. The attack happened last August. Nikia Reid says she was working at a convenience store on Beatties Ford Road back on August 27, 2023, when Jeremy Asbury approached her. Reid says she rejected his advances, he left, and then returned hours later when she got off from work. She says Asbury punched her in the face, and dragged her into his car.
Reid says he raped her in his car behind a Dollar General Store, and then drove her to his home on Columbus Circle.
“He opened the door with the key. So, I said, OK, this is his house. So, from that point, something said start leaving DNA.
Reid says with her bloody hands, she discreetly touched everything in her path, and then…
“He raped me from about 1:30 to 4 o’clock that morning, and I kept saying, OK, you’re done? I seen him dozing off. He took his leg, and interlocked them into my legs with the gun still beside him,” says Reid.
Reid says she laid there for hours waiting for the sun to rise. After spending a horrific 13 hours with a stranger who she says attacked and terrorized her all night, Reid finally convinced him to release her. Asbury finally drove her back to the parking lot he kidnapped her from the night before. Reid quickly walked into the store and called for help.
The next day, CMPD’s SWAT Team surrounded the home on Columbus Circle, and attempted to arrest Asbury for multiple felony charges related to the violent sexual assault of Nikia Reid. Asbury had an extensive criminal history – including assault on a female, assault by strangulation, and robbery. Police say Asbury was armed and barricaded inside his home, and refused to surrender. After a six hour standoff, he shot himself, and died.
Reid is now on the road to healing. She’s joined a support group and expressed her pain through writing.
She hopes other survivors will hear her story and know that help is available.
