Belmont Police: Suspects At Large After Alleged Car Break-Ins

BELMONT, N.C. – Officers with the Belmont Police Department are searching for two suspects following  an alleged car break-in at the Hampton Inn on Thursday.

Officers responded to a call regarding suspicious activity in the hotel parking lot around 2:45 a.m on Celia Alexander Drive.

The 911 caller stated that two men in a truck were reportedly approaching cars in the hotel parking lot, according to a news release.

Officers say when the first responding officer arrived, he observed the suspected truck in the parking lot and attempted to make contact with the suspects occupying the vehicle.

According to a news release, the driver of the truck allegedly exited the parking lot and left the area. The officer on scene attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver reportedly fled from the officer.

Officers began investigating the hotel parking lot and discovered two cars had been broken into.

At approximately 4 a.m, officers received a call that the suspects were traveling southbound on I-85 entering Gaston County at a high rate of speed, according to a news release.

Officers say they followed the vehicle shortly before the suspects came to a stop and fled into a wooded area.

A K-9 Unit with Gaston County Police Department was unsuccessful in locating the suspects.
