CHARLOTTE, N.C. – One person is dead and three others were injured after two drivers ran a red light and collided with each other at a north Charlotte intersection on Thursday night.
The crash happened at the intersection of Statesville Avenue and Atando Avenue on March 7th around 10:33 p.m.
When police arrived, they said a Dodge Charger and Ford Crown Victoria both sustained heavy front-end damage. The Ford vehicle was also on fire.
Authorities were able to extract the Ford driver, 43-year-old Stephen Eric Bowman, but pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Dodge driver, identified as 27-year-old Jordan Devont Mitchell, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center. Two additional passengers – 21-year-old Ya’Aunna Broome and 29-year-old Nicholas Vincent Trapni – sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation found that both drivers allegedly attempted to run solid red lights at the intersection. The Dodge driver attempted to make an illegal left turn on a solid red light while the Ford driver was traveling straight. The two vehicles collided in the intersection.
Police are unsure at this time if speed was a factor in the collision. Toxicology reports are pending.
