Gastonia Former Executive Director For Cancer Non-Profit Pleads Guilty

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A former executive director of a Gastonia non-profit corporation for cancer patients pleaded guilty on Friday after stealing thousands of dollars over a six-year span, according to a news release.

Stephanie L. Roberts, 54, served as the executive director of the non-profit organization that provided aid, support and resources for cancer patients.

Between January 8th, 2016 and January 21st, 2022, Roberts embezzled over $136,000 from the non-profit, officials said. She admitted in court that she failed to pay over $200,000 to the non-profit’s employees. The former executive director also falsely stated the amount of tax withheld from her wages to the IRS in a tax return and claimed the amount was paid to the IRS, officials said.

Roberts pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including:

  • Theft in connection to health care
  • Failure to truthfully account for pay over trust fund taxes
  • Making and subscribing a false tax return

Officials said Roberts will be required to pay full restitution to the non-profit corporation. Her full sentence will be ordered by a federal judge at a hearing at a later date.
