Mecklenburg County Detention Center-Central Experienced Gastrointestinal Outbreak

According to an updated news release, 50 residents of the Mecklenburg County Detention Center-Central experienced stomach illness symptoms over the past weekend. The release further states that the Mecklenburg County Health Department determined the center experienced a gastrointestinal outbreak.

The affected residents were given appropriate medical attention and most recovered within 24 hours of experiencing symptoms, as said by in the release. Precautionary measures were immediately taken by the MCDCC, including cleaning and disinfecting the affected areas of the facility.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There has been a reported increase in illness among residents of the Mecklenburg County Detention Center-Central (MCDCC) that is currently being monitored by the Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release.

The release states that the affected residents did not require additional medical attention and the staff of MCDCC is monitoring the situation closely and are providing the appropriate care. The release also says that operations are continuing as usual, but maintain a heightened level of awareness.

“The well-being of our residents is a top priority,” said Sheriff Garry McFadden. “We are taking this situation seriously and are taking the steps to ensure the health and safety of everyone. I will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust procedures as needed.”
