TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. – Officers located a possible explosive device near a local school and church after responding to a stolen property call, according to a news release.
The release states that officers responded to a stolen property call on April 7, 2024 at 9:19 pm and located a possible explosive device during the search at 73 Fowler Hill Rd. The residence is in close proximity to Millersville Baptist Church, who was contacted and chose to operate Millersville Christian Academy and Millersville Child Development Center under a two-hour delay, as said in the release.
The release further states that Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was contacted to assist in accessing the device and arrived on the scene April 8 at 8:30 am, which resulted in rendering the device safe. Police say that a second explosive device was also found, but rendered safe. Both the school and child development center were closed for the rest of the day. Nobody was harmed during the investigation.
On April 8 at 10:04 am, officers say they located Robert Goins, 31, and charged him with two counts of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of schedule VI controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia. The drug charges were found during the arrest for possession of weapons of mass destruction, according to the release.
