GASTON COUNTY, N.C. – The Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement responded to a call that involved a raccoon that was tested positive for rabies, according to a news release.
The release states that on May 4, 2024, Animal Care and Enforcement received a call in Mounty Holly that reported an injured raccoon in the family barn. The family stated that there was mp human contact with the raccoon or any contact from the family dog.
Police say that specialists impounded the raccoon and sent the animal to Raleigh, where it tested positive for rabies.
The community where the raccoon was found was notified of the incident and verified rabies vaccinations for the family animals, as said in the release. Animal Care and Enforcement emphasize the importance of having valid rabies vaccination for the pet’s health and safety, as well as the health and safety for the owner and community.
This is the third confirmed case of rabies in Gaston County this year.
