MONROE, N.C. – Active warrants have been filed against a mother who lied that her child was burned during the robbery, according to a news release.
The release states that the police responded to a robbery call and were notified that a child has been burned in the process. Police say that Maria Esquivel, who reported the crime, said a black man attacked, robbed and assaulted her and burned her child.
As a result of an investigation, detectives say they discovered evidence that contradicted Esquivel’s story and believed that the child was accidentally burned while he was left unattended by incense. Esquivel admitted that she made up the story about the robbery and assault.
Esquivel has active warrants for:
- Misdemeanor filing a false police report
- Felony child abuse – willful act or omission causing serious bodily injury
- Felony obstruction
The child victim was treated and released from the hospital, as said in the release.
