Heat Heightens Into Memorial Day

We'll need to stay weather-wise for some strong-to-severe storms on Memorial Day Monday.

Summer is swelling into May’s final weekend. Highs have soared well into the 80s on this Saturday despite scattered showers and storms rolling through the Piedmont and Foothills this afternoon. A few isolated cells may fire up around the Metro and southward this evening, but the severe threat is very low. Expect another muggy start to the day on Sunday as highs top out near 90° in the Queen City, a number the Charlotte area hasn’t seen since September 7, 2023 – 261 days ago. A few storms may pop up later in the day, but most communities will enjoy a hot and sunny afternoon.

We’ll need to stay weather-wise on Memorial Day as scattered strong-to-severe thunderstorms may roll in from the west. Gusty winds, torrential rainfall, and damaging hail will be the primary threats, but a low-end tornado risk remains on the table. While your holiday Monday won’t be a washout, expect an hour or two of heavy storms to impact your afternoon. Noticeably cooler and drier air filter in behind Monday’s system as highs only reach the lower 80s on Wednesday and may struggle to get out of the 70s to close out May on Thursday and Friday.
