Suspect Wanted For Attempted Murder In Monroe, Considered Armed And Dangerous

MONROE, N.C. – Police are searching for a man, who they say is considered armed and dangerous, wanted for attempted murder in Monroe.

Police said Cleveland Lamont Waters, 42, escaped from custody Friday while still wearing handcuffs.

Around 4:30 a.m. Friday, Monroe Police responded to Winchester Road and found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries, officials said.

Once police identified Waters as the suspect, they obtained and executed a search warrant at his residence on Locklyn Road. Officials said they found multiple guns and a large amount of illegal narcotics at his home.

After he was placed under arrest and before being booked into jail, police said Waters escaped in the area of Carroll Street, Rolling Hill Drive, and King Arthur Drive.

Deputies used multiple methods, including using K9s and advanced technology, to search the area but were unable to locate Waters.

Waters is a black man that was last seen wearing black pants and a red shirt. He has active arrest warrants for attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and more.

Police said Waters is considered armed and dangerous. He may still be in handcuffs.

Anyone that sees him is asked to not approach him and call 911 immediately.
