Man Shot And Killed By Deputies After Crash On I-85 In Spartanburg County

SPARTANBURG, N.C. – A man died early Sunday morning after a single-vehicle crash on I-85 led to a deputy-involved shooting in Spartanburg County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Around 3:45 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office was called to help the South Carolina Highway Patrol at I-85 north near mile marker 71.

The patrol was investigating a single-vehicle wreck when the driver fled to the woods.

The patrol made contact with the subject, and they said he asked if they were law enforcement. When they replied no, he allegedly said he was armed and asked them to let him know when law enforcement arrived.

Four deputies responded to the area and encountered the suspect behind a fence. After he failed to obey multiple commands, the sheriff’s office said he pulled his shirt up and reached for an object at his waistband.

At this moment, all four deputies fired their weapons towards the man and killed him, the sheriff’s office said.

The shooting is under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
